Open Dialogue has changed the way I connect with people in crisis. It's not just a method, it's a way of being together.

— Practitioner, Italy

Who is this for?

Practitioners

Find peers across borders, discover centers working dialogically, and share what you're learning in your practice — whether you're just starting out or have years of experience.

Trainers & Facilitators

Stay connected with conferences, workshops, and training programs worldwide. Share resources and learn from others shaping how Open Dialogue is taught and practiced.

People with Lived Experience

Join open, respectful conversations about mental health care. Your voice and experience matter here — as a family member, a person who has been through crisis, or someone who cares.

Rooted in dialogue

Open Dialogue began in Western Lapland in the 1980s as a way of responding to mental health crises — not with immediate answers, but with open conversations that include everyone involved. Today it's practiced and adapted in communities around the world, in hospitals, homes, and online spaces. The principles stay the same: listen first, respond together, tolerate uncertainty.

DialogoAperto exists to help these communities find each other.

This looks like a very promising initiative.

I hope it will expand across different contexts, times, and languages.

They’ve put together an excellent website—so rather than take my word for it, click through and explore it yourself.

We’re looking forward to hearing more from Mark, especially about the results so far and the potential for wider adoption in other languages.

Dear colleagues and friends of the forum,

Here I am again to update you on the ongoing development of the outreach project for Open Dialogue and humanistic approaches in psychiatry, as promised in my previous post.

My commitment to this project continues steadily, and I’m pleased to share with you the progress made and the next steps ahead.

Personal Training and Research

This initial phase is focused on personal training. I am deepening my understanding of Open Dialogue by studying key texts:

(received from Luca and published "as is", translation by Deepl)

As a nurse working in a psychiatric inpatient service, I was surprised at how little the Open Dialogue approach is known, not only among nurses but also among physicians and residents.

I tried to observe the resistance I was encountering by talking about it r to understand the mindset from which they were emerging.
I learned about the changing landscape within which psychiatry as a medical discipline has developed.
I do not appreciate the term strategies because it indicates and evokes an almost belligerent attitude in an adversarial context. Instead, I have tried to identify directions in which to move that would allow me to share an approach that is at least interesting to me without aggravating a perceived divide.

In this brief text I would like to share the solutions I have found and am exploring.
